The compressor is the chief functioning element of any cooling system. This is also true of the HVAC compressor. Overall, any type of compressor is a device which, as can be told by its name, compresses something else. The compressor of the HVAC compresses gas by reducing its volume. This is the foundation of any heating, ventilating and air conditioning system.

When the HVAC compresses the gas, the result is that the temperature naturally increases. There are three hypothetical comparisons that we will make to help you understand the processes: First of all is “Isothermal”. This illustration assumes that the compressed gas stays at the same temperature through the entire process. During the process, power is taken out of the system internally and heat is added at the same speed as the compression is taking place. Perfect isothermal compression happens when these compressors would use inter-stage cooling between the different phases of compression. Secondly is “Adiabatic”. This example assumes that the gas does not transport any heat or energy during the compression process. In essence, all the heat stays within which naturally causes an increase of pressure and temperature. This most closely resembles the actual compression process when there is proper insulation, larger volume of gas and a shorter time frame. The last example is “Polytrophic” compression. This example judges both a loss of heat as well as a temperature increase. It assumes that heat is able to enter or leave the compression cycle and the result will be increased pressure and increased temperature, which would cause it to then be above adiabatic. This would result in losses because the cycle efficiency is lacking. In this example, the efficiency of the compression is the ratios of actual (polytrophic) against the temperature rising at 100% (adiabatic).

In the end, the result that you want of the HVAC system is a temperature change. The gas compression is the means to that end as it works in the entire heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The level of performance of the HVAC compressor is interrelated to the overall functionality of your HVAC system.
